Lesson #240: Joy to the Joy stealers.

3/19/15.

Hey.

If you’ve been a reader of this blog for a while, you know that we’ve talked about a lot of different types of people.

Lighthouses, assholes, angels, hataz with a z—and a fan favorite—shitty people.

Today I’m going to add to that list:

Joy stealers.

Some people like to put a bug in your ear and make you believe things that you otherwise wouldn’t—and for no real reason. They don’t just not care about your feelings, but they purposely want to hurt them.

I’m telling you, because some of these people are the ones closest to you, and you don’t even realize it.

For me, my joy stealer was once close to me. I realized what they were doing, so I quietly removed them from my life.

Surprise.

They’re back.

They always come back, and when I least expect it. Somehow, they still manage to slip into my life unannounced, even if for a few minutes, and take away whatever joy I have at the moment. It never fails. And today was one of those times. They upset me, and I let them see it, and I wish I hadn’t.

Joy stealers are a bit complicated.

They’re really not worth standing up to, because that only allows them to win.

But at the same time—what the hell? They can’t get away with this.

So if I could tell you one thing, it would be this:

Don’t let them take what’s yours: Happiness.

And if they do?

Don’t let them see it.

They don’t deserve the satisfaction.

That bug they’re trying to plant is only a seed of their own self-dislike.

And ain’t nobody got time for that.

Day 240.
