Lesson #259: Recycle the happy.

4/6/15.

Never forfeit a chance to tell someone how special they are to you, or how much they mean to you, or how much you love them.

People tend to reserve these moments for when someone has done something, or when they need something. People save their gratefulness and appreciation and praise for big moments, when really, it’s the small ones that possibly can mean the most.

Not just to you—but to them as well.

I have a new rule.

If someone does something that makes you happy, or says something that really meant a lot to you, tell them.

Catch them off guard.

Tell them how much it made your day.

Don’t just think it to yourself. Like, what a waste of a thought. Share the joy that they gave you. Give the joy back.

If a friend compliments you, text them later that day and tell them how great it made you feel. If someone had you over as a guest, thank them the next day for being such a wonderful host. If a person gives you advice, pull them aside the next time you see them and tell them how much it helped you. Tell your boyfriend or girlfriend or partner or husband or wife that that thing they did the other day was really nice, and that it meant a lot. Stop by your boss’s office and tell them that it really meant a lot when they noticed what a great job you were doing. Leave a note. Write a letter. Whisper it, or shout out, or just say it.

I promise they’ll crack a smile.

And this can go beyond people you have recently interacted with.

Randomly tell your mom or dad you miss them and are grateful for everything they’ve done for you (which is a lot, don’t ever forget it). Thinking about an old friend and that time they did that thing for you? Shoot them a message or a phone call. Thinking about an acquaintance that you didn’t really know that well, but they inspired you and didn’t even know it? I promise, you’re not creepy. They will be flattered. Tell them.

It doesn’t matter if it’s been a day, or a week, or five years. You don’t have to spark conversation, or even make plans to meet up. Just tell them hi. You miss them. You love them. You see them (Shameless plug for Lesson #246). You hope they’re doing well.

Reach out. Make an effort to show thanks and appreciation and love.

I can’t even tell you how good it makes me feel when I receive an email from an old YouTube fan saying “I watched your videos when I was growing up and you changed my life.” Or when I get a message from a long lost high school friend that says “This is weird because we haven’t talked in a while, but I love your blog.” Or even a text from a relative or a friend’s mom that says: “It’s good to see you’re doing good.”

When you tell someone how much they mean to you, or how happy they made or make you, even in small instances—you give joy right back to them.

It’s recycling.

Yes……………..recycling joy.

(Just go with it)

Recycle the happy.

The Lion King said it best.

It’s the Circle of Life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love

Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the Circle
The Circle of Life

It’s the circle of life.

Err—the circle of happy.

Recycle on.

Pure greatness once again from my lovely friend Mia!

Growing up my parents always told me that kind words go a long way, because you never know how that can impact someone’s day. That has always stuck with me!
